It's always surprising to find how many myths are out there regarding Botulinum Toxin (AKA Botox). It's time for us to dispel some of those myths and address the fallacies so you can make more informed choices. Here are the top 10 myths about Botox injections, along with why each one is false.

1. "Botox is a dangerous procedure." False.
People sometimes perceive Botox is very dangerous. As a matter of fact, Botulinum Toxin became the only FDA-approved treatment option for the temporary improvement of glabellar lines (also known as "frown lines" between the brows) in 2002. Since its approval, millions of patients have benefited from this treatment, and provided it is carried out by a trained expert and the patient is medically suitable, it can be administered safely.

2. "Botox is invasive surgery." False.
Botox is not actually plastic surgery, despite the fact that it is often administered by plastic surgeons. It is in fact a relatively quick non-surgical injection that doesn't require any anaesthetic and can take only a few minutes depending on the procedure.
3. "Botox injections are painful." False.
While everybody's pain threshold is different, most clients view Botox as a relatively pain-free procedure and no anaesthetic or numbing is usually required for its administration. Some clients may experience a pinch or slight discomfort but that is usually the extent of it.

4. "Everyone will be able to tell that you've had Botox." False.
While you may experience some temporary swelling or redness immediately after the injection, when Botox is administered by a trained and experienced practitioner the results are meant to appear natural. You should look like yourself, only with fewer wrinkles over time.
5. "Botox will prevent you from being able to show emotions." False.
One of the most common myths regarding Botox is that it will leave you with a stiff, “plastic” appearance. In TV shows and movies, you’ll sometimes see people apparently unable to smile or show any kind of expression on their faces. This is extremely exaggerated for entertainment value. Again, trained and experienced practitioners will recommend the best treatment of anti-wrinkle injections for you to deliver natural looking results. So worry not, you’ll certainly be able to smile, show fear and excitement, and more.
6. "Botox is unnatural and filled with chemicals." False.
Contrary to popular belief, Botox is a safe and natural treatment. It is the only treatment for frown lines that has been approved in the United States for safe injections in adults, and it is made from a highly pure botulinum toxin that leaves the body. In fact, Botox is used in medicine for a number of medical procedures quite apart from aesthetic or cosmetic procedures.

7. "Botox is just for women." False.
Botox procedures are suitable for both women and men, and in fact more and more men are starting to see the benefits of delaying the visible signs of ageing. You don't have to be a woman to appreciate the increase in self-confidence that a younger, more rejuvenated face can provide.
8. "Botox will be able to get rid of all of your lines/wrinkles." False.
Botox is a cosmetic injectable that is used to reduce the appearance of tiny lines in different parts according the the musculature of the face, however it will not affect all the face or erase all visible lines. For some of the deeper lines, your cosmetic injector may recommend some dermal filler to help with deeper folds and hollows.

9. "Once you start getting Botox, you’ll never be able to stop." False.
It's possible you've heard that once you start getting Botox injections, you'll have to keep getting them for the rest of your life. This isn't correct! You are free to discontinue receiving injections at any time. Your wrinkles and fine lines will return over time, but they will not be any worse than they were before you started using Botox. In fact, because your muscles will be trained to relax after repeated Botox treatments, your frown lines may remain less severe than if you had never had the procedure.
10. "Botox starts working immediately." False.
While Botox is relatively simple to administer by a trained expert, and has relatively little downtime afterward, the results may take 3 to 5 days to appear and may take up to two weeks for the effects to be visible. The effects should remain for about 4 to 6 months after which time your wrinkles and lines will gradually return.
